The stone "commerates the events of 24th September 1786, when an unknown sailor travelling the Old Portsmouth Road was murdered by three assailants". A Celtic Cross stands nearby to mark the place where the three were hanged in chains on a gibbet and left for nearly three years until brought down by a storm.
