Grape vines growing in volcanic ash, protected from the persistent trade winds by walls of lava rock in Lanzarote. Very labour intensive and the grapes have to be hand picked when harvested. The volcanic ash acts like a mulch, protecting the roots from the summer heat and also keeping the moisture from the sparse rain from evaporating. The resulting wine was excellent!
